I'm sure you have heard many things about yoga. Yes, yoga reduces stress, helps you become more flexible, facilitates a better night's sleep, strengthens the body, regulates eating habits, boosts mood, etc. Its effects are farther reaching than merely aesthetic and emotional benefits. Most people in the west (including me) are introduced to yoga as a form of physical exercise. As I became more diligent in my practice, I was so fortunate to find that not only was my body becoming stronger, but something inside was shifting and I began to feel more grounded and at home within myself.
The goal of yoga is to awaken each of us to our truth by going inwards. Many of us have become conditioned to letting our focus to flutter around lists, schedules, deadlines, etc. It's pretty inevitable if you live in any modern society. We become detached from ourselves as a result of accepting this to be our way of life. Through the practice of yoga, we can learn to tune in and reconnect with ourselves. We can quiet the mind and connect with the spirit, while also becoming strong and healthy.
Practicing yoga does not require anyone to change their religion. It is a patient process, gently allowing us to become observers of our thoughts, physical perceptions, and emotions. Yoga is for every one. No prior experience is necessary, only the desire to practice.
